Misconceptions About Clinical Hypnosis

Misconceptions about clinical hypnosis

Clinical hypnosis has nothing to do with those hypnotists that we can see on television, but this is a therapeutic tool with very positive results. However, erroneous beliefs about this type of therapy cause many people to fear or refuse to use this resource in therapy.

It is necessary to mention that clinical hypnosis is only one part of an intervention with many other elements  that will offer the results that are intended to be achieved. For example, it is highly effective in helping to manage pain, anxiety, overcoming traumas and even to address those physiological disorders that have a great psychological factor.

The myths about clinical hypnosis

One of the myths surrounding clinical hypnosis is that you lose consciousness, however this is not the case. The patient who participates in this process allows himself to be carried away by the suggestions that his therapist makes to him and becomes involved in such a deep emotional way that he accesses his unconscious part. However, he does not lose consciousness. If so, he most likely fell asleep.

The next myth has to do with that fear of saying everything you think and not being able to lie. Although when you are in a consultation the least you want is to lie to the therapist, this myth already loses all its strength. In addition, what is sought is that the patient does not lie to himself, because with this objective the therapy would be meaningless.

Another myth that circulates about clinical hypnosis is to believe that the therapists who practice it have some kind of special power. Big mistake. Professionals specialized in hypnosis apply precise techniques, with a well-founded scientific basis, where the voice has a special role. Thanks to the voice, the patient can be brought to that necessary state of calm. There is no magic here, no powers. Only specific procedures.

The last of the myths that we are going to talk about refers to the fear of losing control when a patient is hypnotized. It is believed that the hypnotist will be able to ask for anything and that they will lack the will to refute this. However, this is not the goal of hypnosis and this belief can generate a fear of letting go to solve, once and for all, the real problem.

Thanks to this tool, we may discover that the relationship that our parents maintained has affected the choice of couples we make today, that this fear comes from an insecurity resulting from a mockery that marked us in our childhood or that the lies that existed within family members have caused us to react disproportionately when we discover a lie.

Many of the problems for which we have no answers have their origin in childhood, where most of our memories have already been forgotten. However, everything experienced leaves its mark on the unconscious: it keeps all the experiences and beliefs that cause us so many difficulties and for which we do not know how to find an answer.

As we have seen, this type of therapeutic hypnosis does not seek to control, deceive or manipulate the patient, but to help him discover the origin of his problems and their solution. A very effective tool that manages to reach that part of the mind that keeps everything. If performed by a good professional,  there will be no tricks that seek to manipulate, just heal.
